The prevalence of galaxy overdensities around UV-luminous Lyman

چکیده

Before the end of epoch reionization, Hydrogen in Universe was predominantly neutral. This leads to a strong attenuation Ly$\alpha$ lines $z\gtrsim6$ galaxies intergalactic medium. Nevertheless, has been detected up very high redshifts ($z\sim9$) for several especially UV luminous galaxies. Here, we test what extent galaxy's local environment might impact transmission such sources. We present an analysis dedicated Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging CANDELS/EGS field search fainter neighbours around three most and distant spectroscopically confirmed emitters: EGS-zs8-1, EGS-zs8-2 EGSY-z8p7 at $z_\mathrm{spec}=7.73$, 7.48, 8.68, respectively. combine multi-wavelength HST with Spitzer data reliably select $z\sim7-9$ central, UV-luminous In all cases, find clear enhancement neighbouring compared expected number blank (by factor $\sim 3-9\times$). Our thus reveals ubiquitous overdensities emitting sources heart cosmic reionization epoch. show that our results are excellent agreement expectations from Dragons simulation, confirming theoretical prediction first ionized bubbles preferentially formed overdense regions. JWST follow-up observations identified here will be needed confirm their physical association map out regions produced by these

Galaxy Clustering around Nearby Luminous Quasars

We examine the clustering of galaxies around a sample of 20 luminous low redshift (z < ∼ 0.30) quasars observed with the Wide Field Camera-2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The HST resolution makes possible galaxy identification brighter than V = 23.5 and as close as 2 to the quasar. We find a significant enhancement of galaxies within a projected separation of < ∼ 100 h kpc of the quasars. If w...

Westphal-mmd 11: an Interacting, Submillimeter Luminous Lyman Break Galaxy

We present new Hubble Space Telescope, high-resolution optical imaging of the submillimeter luminous Lyman break galaxy (LBG), Westphal-MMD 11, an interacting starburst at . The new imaging data, in conjunction z p 2.979 with reanalysis of Keck optical and near-IR spectra, demonstrate MMD 11 to be an interacting system of at least three components: a luminous blue source, a fainter blue source,...

Lyman - α Imaging of a Very Luminous z = 2 . 3 Starburst Galaxy with WFPC 2 ⋆

We investigate the Lyα and UV continuum morphology of one of the most luminous known Lyman α emitting galaxies (the ‘Coup Fourré Galaxy’), associated with a z = 2.3 damped Lyα absorption system in the spectrum of the QSO PHL 957 (Lowenthal et al. 1991). The galaxy is observed with the HST WFPC2, through a narrow filter (F410M) corresponding to rest-frame Lyα for a total exposure time of 41.2 ks...

A Luminous Lyman-α Emitting Galaxy at Redshift z=6.535: Discovery and Spectroscopic Confirmation

We present a redshift z = 6.535 galaxy discovered by its Lyman-α emission in a 9180Å narrowband image from the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey. The Lyman-α line luminosity (1.1×10 erg s) is among the largest known for star forming galaxies at z ≈ 6.5. The line shows the distinct asymmetry that is characteristic of high-redshift Lyman-α. The 2σ lower bound on the observer-frame equivalent w...

The Cosmic Horseshoe: Discovery of an Einstein Ring around a Giant Luminous Red Galaxy

We report the discovery of an almost complete (∼ 300) Einstein ring of diameter 10 in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 5 (DR5). Spectroscopic data from the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory reveals that the deflecting galaxy has a line-of-sight velocity dispersion in excess of 400 kms and a redshift of 0.444, whilst the source is a star-forming galaxy with a reds...
